EXPANDA PIPE CASE STUDIES
Expanda Pipe Wins Race Against Time in Ipswich.

Lining deep sewers 525mm in diameter under busy streets would be a challenge for any relining system. However a project in Ipswich, Queensland, added a tougher constraint.

The Problem:
Deteriorated concrete pipes 525mm in diameter, and up to 9 metres deep, were taking flow from a sewage pumping station. One of the conditions of the relining contract was that the pumps could only be stopped for 45 minutes at a time.

The location of the pipeline, under a major roundabout in a built up area, meant that by-pass pumping was not feasible. If the flow could not be relieved every 45 minutes, the only option was to use tankers to transport it. Apart from the inconvenience, it would have been prohibitively expensive.

The Solution:
For relining contractor Interflow, this was a project just made for the Expanda Pipe system. As Expanda Pipe does not use heating in any part of the process, it can be installed quickly under conditions of moderate flow.

Live Flow Conditions
Lining a large diameter pipe in live flow conditions.

The Project:
The Interflow crew worked to a precise procedure:

  • The main line was plugged upstream and flow from incoming lines controlled.

  • The winding machine was then placed in the access chamber and a fixed diameter liner wound into the deteriorated pipeline up to the next access chamber.

  • After 45 minutes the upstream plug was removed. When the flow subsided, the plug was reinserted and expansion of the Expanda Pipe, to the full internal diameter of the deteriorated pipe, was carried out.
Careful planning, coupled with the experience of the Queensland based Interflow crew, enabled this difficult project to be completed in blocks of 45 minutes, with negligible inconvenience to the Ipswich community.
