INTERCHEM P
Interchem P, denoting “Protect”, is a polyurea resin coating used to seal and protect the walls and surfaces of structurally sound manholes and access chambers from further gas attack, infiltration and deterioration.
If the exposed gas-attacked access chamber walls are left untreated the structure will continue to deteriorate and this may eventually lead to a complete loss in structural integrity of the access chamber. Any subsequent repairs will be significantly more disruptive and expensive. Interchem P is a cost-effective preventative repair solution for protecting access chambers before it is too late.
The other consideration is that access chambers, on average, account for up to 30% of the total surface area of a sewer network. Since one of the major reasons for renewing and sealing sewer pipelines is to stop infiltration of ground water into the network, treating only the pipes still leaves up to 30% of the sewer network unprotected and exposed to infiltration and deterioration. To guarantee complete sealing of the sewer network it is necessary to seal the access chambers as well. Interchem P can seal access chambers and complete the final link in a total sewer renewal program.
The two-stage coating system consists of an epoxy based primer and a polyurea top-coat. Before application of the primer the surfaces are cleaned using high pressure water. The epoxy primer is mixed and applied by hand brush to the surfaces and allowed to cure before application of the polyurea.
The polyurea is sprayed onto the primed surfaces and cures in seconds to form a smooth coating, the thickness of which is typically 3mm. Polyurea has material properties which are highly desirable of coatings: high abrasion resistance, excellent resistance to chemicals, excellent impact resistance, and is hard and tough but flexible enough to handle normal ground movement and surface traffic vibrations without cracking. The properties mean Interchem P can be applied in a cost-effective thinner layer than cementitious or epoxy coatings and still offer a similar or better level of protection.
Interchem P is a simple, no-fuss, coating process. The spray application means better coating thickness control, consistent quality, and faster application times. This makes the process less disruptive, reliable and economical. Overall, a standard access chamber can be inspected, cleaned, primed and sprayed with polyurea in a total open-lid time of approximately 2 hours.
Interchem P can be used to effectively seal manholes and access chambers of any depth and diameter.
